What kind of movie is your life? Are we talking dry documentary, one dimensional action flick, self-deprecating comedy, or is your movie a character piece where we learn about who you are and we are compelled to continue watching to see where it all goes?
Good movies allow us to see the characters as genuine authentic people with real struggles and accomplishments that we can relate to. Movies do this by showing the moments other people don’t see, when the character is alone or not afraid to express themselves. That is the secret to all of this; show who you are and how you feel to be more compelling.
So try it next time to tell someone a feeling you are a bit reserved about, a fear, an insecurity, something that is hard for you. However, just like in a movie make your ending happy. Wrap it up with optimism and a confident attitude.
I’ll leave you with an example:
“Recently a friend of mine got rescued by the coastguard off one of my local kiteboarding beaches. I have to admit I am really scared to go out there again. I convince myself that I am prepared and I know what to do in an emergency but I can’t shake this feeling of dread as I think about being stuck out in the water, bobbing up and down just hoping some boat will appear as I bob my head above the next swell and can see the horizon again. However I know it will make me better if I am cautious, so I guess that very fear and caution is what will keep me safe. Plus it adds a bit to the adrenaline!”
