Leadership is not always about who is most qualified.

Leadership is not always about who will do the best job.

Leadership is not always about being the person everyone thinks should lead.

Leadership is not about being right or being the best.

The leaders I have met that are the most effective are ones who are often overlooked when it came time for the congratulations. Being a good leader is about being good with people. What a good leader can do is bring out the best in the people around them and inspire everyone to reach for levels that they didn’t know they could achieve.

Which leader are you:

Makes everyone on their team know they are appreciated for the good work they do.
Tries to understand why people are failing to perform before giving criticism.
Encourages their team to innovate and individually work on new ideas.
Sees the strengths in their team members and tries to play to people’s strength.
Is not threatened by those with opposing or new ideas, instead channels that creativity.

Or

Feels they have the most experience and should have the final say.
Has little patience for those who do not perform to the level you expect.
Keeps their distance from their team members since friendship has no place in business.
Often use fear of losing jobs or position to motivate your team.
Doesn’t feel anyone is as qualified and that is why they are the leader.

What kind of leader do you want to be and what kind of leader would you follow?

Leadership is not an innate ability. Most leaders step up because they want to be in control, because they feel they can do the best job. Imagine leading because you feel you can help others do the things they can do better than you.

Want to learn to be that leader? Stay tuned for more articles on being a good leader and other topics that can help you be more effective in whatever field you are in.
